You may already have heard of Google+ Circles. In fact, if you own a Gmail account that you regularly use, a mail or two inviting you to check it out may have been delivered by Google to you before. That, or, it may have come up in one of your casual conversation with a pal.

Regardless of how you’ve stumbled upon the terms, somehow, you’re familiar that it’s a feature of a social network established by Google. You may have assumed that it’s like being in Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter – just like being in another platform that enables you to reach out to an audience. Beyond that, however, don’t you wish to know more about it?

Google+ Circles: What Are They?

Google+ Circles, a primary feature of Google+, are a categorical system that aims to keep you updated with the vast content of selected people and in turn, give these same people the permission to be updated with your own posts. They let you connect with almost anybody you like – provided they’re included in your list of contacts or they can be searched for by their names or email addresses. With them, you may have superior control over what can be seen by others, as well as what you can see, within your network.

Why Are Google+ Circles Important?

  • With them, you can avoid misunderstandings
  • With them, you can be followed by people you don’t officially know
  • With them, you can categorize people
  • With them, you can connect to up to 5000 people
  • With them, you can create your own network
  • With them, you can maintain your privacy
  • With them, you can pay attention to the updates of certain Google+ users
  • With them, you can stay in touch with a crowd of your choice
  • With them, you can stay invisible
  • With them, you won’t have to bother a group of people with irrelevant content
  • With them, you won’t have to sift through everybody’s post in the Home Stream if you’re eyeing a specific one
Since they privilege you with the choice of relaying content only to people of your choice, Google+ Circles are important. They can make sure that all information you share is guarded. If you don’t like to open up your life to the public, you can choose not to.

For instance, you intend to post a wacky family picture and you prefer that your classmates and co-workers stay unaware that such a photo exists. A way to accomplish this is to create a circle, edit the settings, and share the particular media content only to the people who belong to the category of your family members.

Managing Your Google+ Circles

Unless you manage your Google+ Circles, along with its visibility settings, you won’t have a guarantee that your posts will not be seen elsewhere but on your account. Since Google+ is a vast social network, your need for privacy may be put on the line. For all you know, your uploaded content may be featured on their own stream, too. So even if you have just 80 people in each of your Circles and these people all have 1000 members on their own Circles, it can mean that you’re broadcasting to 80, 0000 potentially active users.

Setbacks of Google+ Circles

  • Anyone in your Google+ Circles can re-post your own content and have it seen by members of his circle
  • Even after you’ve deleted one of your Google+ Circles, the posts can still exist in the streams of members of that circle
  • The last Google+ Circles that you’ve sent updates with are automatically the default circles for your posts
As its importance was discussed, the setbacks to Google+ Circles should be named too. Be aware that you should be wary when using the system. Especially if your privacy is crucial to you, being in a hurry while you’re sharing information is not recommended. Granted you’re observant with the different settings before posting content, you may not find the minor issues with the Google+ feature disadvantageous.

Naming Your Google+ Circles

  • 7

  • Families
  • Grey’s Anatomy fans
  • High school buddies
  • People I don’t know well
  • People whose names start with N

  • Teachers
  • Teammates

The name you want to assign to each of your Google+ Circles is up to you. You can choose something ordinary or something that stands out. You can even label them with a tag that’s totally unrelated to their purpose. However, since the main objective of the feature is to assist you in categorizing the people who are connected with you through your Google+ account, it’s suggested to name your circles accordingly to avoid confusion.

Google+ Circles vs. Groups

  • Members of Google+ Circles are acquainted with their fellow members
  • Members of Google+ Circles are not informed of the circles’ specific name by default
  • Members of Google+ Circles understand why the circles have been created
  • Members of Google+ Circles understand why they have been selected to belong in specific circles
Despite being often mistaken to be one and the same, Google+ Circles and Groups are different. If the former is shown as Facebook’s friend lists, the comparison can be better understood. Like Facebook’s system, it allows you more options to choose from which will ultimately benefit you with a good level of security.

Default Circles

Acquaintances, Family, Friends, and Following are the default Google+ Circles you have. You may have to officially create your first circle but you’re about to find these 4 in your lists to make it easier for you. As Google+ makes suggestions based on the people you have previously sent e-mails to or those that are under your Gmail contacts, you may easily drag and drop people in these groupings.
